I had eight participants. Half of them were very unsure about coming to a poetry workshop. These notes remind me exactly why I love my work. By halfway in we had an impromptu rendition of ‘It’s A Long Way To Tippereary’ and by the end Harry, who didn’t think he was going to enjoy himself At All, recited the opening stanzas to Thomas Gray’s ‘Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard’ which he suddenly remembered from school. I felt quite tearful and left with a real feeling that this is why I do what I do. These are the moments I want to build my life with.
